The American Legion is built on four core pillars:

 Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation,

National Security,

Americanism, and

 Children & Youth.

These pillars guide the organization's work in supporting veterans, promoting national security, fostering patriotism, and helping young people.

1. Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation: This pillar focuses on providing services and advocacy to improve the lives of veterans, including assistance with VA benefits, healthcare, and employment. It also includes initiatives like Heroes to Hometowns, which helps veterans transition back to civilian life.

2. National Security: This pillar emphasizes a strong national defense and a commitment to the well-being of service members. It includes support for the military, advocating for a strong national defense, and addressing issues like homeland security and the well-being of military families.

3. Americanism: This pillar focuses on upholding the principles of Americanism, including patriotism, civic participation, and the protection of American values. Key initiatives include promoting the Pledge of Allegiance, supporting Boy Scouts of America, and encouraging voter registration.

4. Children & Youth: This pillar is dedicated to supporting the healthy development of children and youth. It includes programs aimed at child welfare, education, and combating issues like drug abuse and child exploitation.
